Fantastica ‘90: Friends Indeed of Free Clinic

The Friends of the Los Angeles Free Clinic’s Fantastica ‘90, held July 29, netted $101,210.28. The clinic offers free medical and dental services, psychological and legal counseling, a high-risk youth program and two help lines. Mimi West and Ellen Hoberman were co-chairs.

* Shelter Partnership will benefit by $16,111 as a result of the Benson & Hedges Blues celebration at the Pacific Amphitheatre. One dollar from each ticket sold from June 4 to 9 was set aside for the nonprofit organization that provides technical, development and material assistance and public policy support to 160 homeless shelters in Los Angeles County.

* American Heart Assn., with Magic Johnson on its team at the second annual Magic’s Golf Classic held Sept. 10 at the Riviera Country Club, netted more than $175,000. Major contributors sponsoring holes along the course, were Continental Airlines, Marukin Corp. and Arco. Proceeds will go toward research and education programs to fight heart disease in the Greater Los Angeles Community.

* Hospice in the Home has received a donation of $6,084 from the Glendale Community Foundation to purchase computer hardware and software needed to administer its Medicare Certified Hospice Benefit program. The Hospice, started in 1980, brings skilled care, support and comfort to terminally ill patients in the Glendale area.

* Hollygrove, a Los Angeles Orphans Home Society, has just received a $1,000 contribution from Dippell Realty. The contribution, was the result of a yard sale held in the Larchmont Village/Hancock Park area, and will be used by Hollygrove to care for children who have been neglected or abandoned.

* The Medical Center of La Mirada Hospital Auxiliary has awarded a total of $7,500 to six high school seniors and three college students, all pursuing careers in health care. The students were honored at a luncheon on June 8. The auxiliary has raised the money through bake sales, luncheons, drawings and their annual participation in the La Mirada volunteers’ running event “The Human Race.”

* The Asian Pacific Family Center in Rosemead, a division of Pacific Clinics, held its third annual Awards Dinner for more than 900 guests at the Quiet Cannon restaurant in Montebello. The event netted $52,000 to continue to provide outpatient services to the children, adults, elderly and homeless of the San Gabriel Valley. County Supervisor Ed Edelman was the honorary chair. KABC-TV’s Joanne Ishimine was mistress of ceremonies.
