The Real Performers

The Sept. 16 Emmy Awards broadcast consisted of a group of vastly overpaid people congratulating each other for some vastly overrated performances.

I think about friends of mine--a teacher trying to instill an enthusiasm for learning; a microbiologist searching for a cure for a disease (but who can’t afford to buy his own home); an engineer looking for ways to ensure that our buildings will stand the worst of earthquakes; a policeman who risks his life daily yet his wife felt the need to return to work in order to make ends meet. The list goes on.

These are the great performers of the world, and it is sad and a little obscene that our twisted value system allows such discrepancies when dispensing rewards.
