Striking students ignored pleas for calm from President Zhelyu Zhelev as 10,000 workers at a key refining plant threatened to walk out, cutting off the gasoline supply, if Bulgaria’s government did not resign. Finance Minister Belcho Belchev warned that the country’s economic crisis could topple the government, made up mostly of former Communists.
