Snow fell over wide areas in the West, Midwest and the East, and record cold temperatures chilled the central plains. A heavy snow warning was posted for the southwest mountains of Colorado, and forecasters said an additional foot of snow could fall on the San Juan Mountains. Six inches fell at Ft. Defiance, Ariz., and at Monticello, Utah.
