HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Helix Girls Sweep Their Volleyball Match

Playing for the last time at home, top-seeded Helix defeated Serra, 15-8, 15-6, 15-1, in a San Diego Section Division II girls’ volleyball quarterfinal match. The Highlanders improved their record to 30-0 and extended their record Section home victory streak to 29 matches. Karrie Downey had 12 kills and five aces to lead Helix.
In another Division II girls’ volleyball match:
Torrey Pines d. Mar Vista, 15-4, 15-0, 16-14--Second-seeded Torrey Pines called time out at 4-4 in the first game, then scored 26 consecutive points. Amy Peters led Torrey Pines (23-2) with 11 kills. Mar Vista ended its season 22-10.

At Grossmont High
Mt. Miguel 16, Bonita Vista 8--Sixth-seeded Mt. Miguel (15-12) never trailed, and Matt Berry scored six goals and Bill Throop five for the Matadors. Bonita Vista dropped to 13-13.
Mira Mesa 14, Helix 12 (OT)--Helix recovered from an 11-8 deficit with 2:49 remaining to tie it, 11-11, before the overtime, in which the Highlanders were outscored, 3-1. No. 8 Mira Mesa improved to 16-10; Helix dropped to 12-12.

At Mt. Carmel
Valhalla 20, Army-Navy 6--Mike Nalu scored eight goals and teammates Eric Nielsen and John Allen added five and three goals for top-ranked Valhalla (20-4). Army-Navy fell to 13-9.
USDHS 10, Carlsbad 7--For the No. 2 Dons, Doug Munz had five goals and Alex Chehansky added four. USDHS (15-9) led, 5-0, after the first quarter. Carlsbad finished its season 17-7.

Division IV
Bishop’s d. Holtville, 15-2, 15-3, 15-11--Kaylie Orr (nine) and Jocelyn Eckhardt (seven) combined for 16 kills for No. 3 Bishop’s, which improved to 14-5. Holtville dropped to 8-9.
Marian d. Mountain Empire, 15-7, 15-3, 13-15, 16-14--Visiting Marian (13-12) handed No. 4 Mountain Empire the loss. The Crusaders were led by Adanya Guevara with 10 kills and Georgette Esperanza with eight.
Division V
Francis Parker d. Lutheran, 15-1, 15-1, 15-7--No. 1 Francis Parker (9-0) made short work of Lutheran (4-11), moving to the semifinals in only 35 minutes. Emily Dawe had 12 aces and Amy Meier had eight kills in the winning effort.
Football
Desert Coastal League
Army-Navy 20, Calipatria 7--James Reed rushed for 89 yards in 12 carries and had two touchdowns for Army-Navy, which gained 252 yards rushing and held Calipatria (3-6) to 169 yards on offense. With the victory, Army-Navy (8-0) won the league championship.
