SACRAMENTO — Dan Lungren, the Republican candidate for state attorney general, today moved ahead of Democratic rival Arlo Smith for the first time as election officials hand-counted absentee returns.
In the latest count, Lungren received 3,285,193 votes to Smith’s 3,283,660, a margin of 1,533 votes, out of more than 6.56 million votes cast.
The count was continuing and was not expected to be completed at least until the weekend, although preliminary results may be available sooner.
The counting has been delayed in Orange County, a Republican stronghold, by an order from Superior Court Judge James Smith.
