Letter Lacking

Please let me take exception to Oliver Berliner’s letter to the editor (Nov. 4). Berliner says travelers who might go to Cuba would find “there’s nothing left” there.
As a Canadian citizen and, consequently, exempt from the United States’ archaic laws regarding travel to Cuba, I have visited that lovely island three times.
The people are friendly, the living standard is the highest in the Caribbean and it is an island filled with history, scenic beauty and reasonable prices. It is far from the “hapless” nation Berliner describes.
What is hapless is a policy that forbids Americans from free travel. Obviously, the U.S. sanctions against Iraq and Libya make sense from a safety standpoint, but there is no valid reason to keep Americans from going to Cuba, as more than 100,000 Canadians do each year.
