Comptroller of the Currency Rebuts Critics: The top U.S. bank regulator dismissed criticism that his tough policies are pushing the nation into recession. Robert Clarke, dubbed by some bankers “the regulator from hell,” said: “We have to maintain proper lending standards and proper supervisory standards to keep the banks in business. We can’t afford to go back to pretending the problems don’t exist.”
