P.M. BRIEFING : News Rack Will Make Change

WASHINGTON — A battery-operated news rack developed by USA Today will accept dollar bills and give change, the newspaper said.
The Gannett Co. publication said Wednesday that the racks have been placed in subway and office locations in the Washington area and that 200 will be installed in other cities this year.
USA Today and Mars Electronics of Philadelphia spent three years developing the machine, said Larry Lindquist, the newspaper’s senior vice president for circulation. He said the newspaper designed the news rack and is seeking a patent.
USA Today said half its 1.8 million daily circulation consists of newspapers bought from news racks and newsstands. The rest is home, office and mail delivery.
The newspaper sells for 50 cents.
