NEWPORT BEACH — Two armed men are sought by police after separate robberies Wednesday evening, police said.
Sgt. Andy Gonis said the first robbery occurred at 5:15 p.m. at the Roadway Inn at 6208 W. Coast Highway. A blond man, about 35, simulated a handgun wrapped in a towel and demanded money from a clerk, according to witnesses. The man, wearing a black baseball cap, escaped with about $300.
A second robbery, at Sav-On Drugs at 1020 Irvine Ave., occurred at 6:25 p.m., Gonis said. Two employees said a man revealed a handgun tucked into his waistband and demanded cash while they were emptying a cash-register drawer.
The gunman fled on foot with about $600 after warning them not to follow, Gonis said.
The gunman was described as about 6 feet tall, 165 pounds and in his 30s. He was unshaven, had dark brown hair and spoke with a British accent, Gonis said.
