A 43-year-old National Steel & Shipbuilding Co. security guard was listed in fair condition Friday at UC San Diego Medial Center after he was shot in the face and robbed late Thursday night, San Diego police said.
Larry Beyers was at the NASSCO company parking lot in the 2100 block of Harbor Drive at 11:30 p.m. when two men approached and asked for directions to Interstate 5, said police spokesman Dave Cohen.
Beyers gave them directions, and the men left, but returned five minutes later.
The two then asked to use the phone. Beyers told them he did not have one. The men then knocked him to the ground and shot him in the face, Cohen said.
The robbers took a two-way radio, a watch and a wallet with about $100, Cohen said.
