PLEASURES OF A TANGLED LIFE by Jan Morris (Vintage: $12.95). A prominent travel writer for several decades, Jan Morris is best known for her 1974 autobiography “Conundrum,” in which she described her male-to-female gender change. In this collection of short pieces, she recounts the charms of living in an ancient, book-lined house in Wales; a memorable smorgasbord in Stockholm, Sweden; the fusty appeal of the old offices of the London Times; the faded splendor of Venice. A few hours with this cozy and diverting book should cure almost anyone’s post-holiday let-down.
