Commenting on Film Commentary

I dunno. When I was a little girl, my dad told me “you judge a movie by the story line, pacing, technical details, editing, direction, script writing, photography, background music, mood setting, main actors and supporting cast.” He added, “And definitely not necessarily in that order.” It must have made sense to me, because I’ve used those guidelines for many years to good advantage.
In 1990 I saw 263 movies, including all of the ones the Calendar critics touted as best films in the Dec. 23 issue. I’m surprised at their selection for two reasons: that they could find even 10 “best films” and that they all left “Pretty Woman” off their lists.
“Woman” was the only movie I saw all year that excelled in all the criteria given above.
