TAX BREAK: Have you noticed it’s cheaper to shop this year? It is, but you have to look closely. . . . The state sales tax, which was up 0.25% last year to pay for Bay Area earthquake repairs, returned to 6% on Jan. 1. That saves a penny for every $4 spent. . . . Enjoy it while you can. Orange County’s new 0.5% sales tax for transportation is set to kick in April 1.
