Urging Los Angeles to regain the Olympic spirit, Mary Lou Retton, a gold medalist in the 1984 Olympic Games, launched the campaign to enlist volunteers for the U.S. Olympic Festival July 12-21.
Appearing with Retton at a Broadway Plaza news conference was Elizabeth Primrose-Smith, president and executive director of the festival’s organizing committee. She said 10,000 volunteers will be needed for the 37-sport, 21-venue competition, and that applications will be accepted until March.
