Santa Monica : New Meeting Rules Studied
To spare the public from its more mundane business, the City Council directed the city attorney to write an ordinance that will change the order of its meetings.
Under the current system, the council conducts much of its routine business, such as parking legislation and final approvals, before dealing with matters that tend to be of broader public interest, such as new ordinances and appeals of actions by other agencies. Under the new system envisioned by the council, the order would be reversed.
The change would be part of a broader overhaul in the rules of order that govern council meetings. Another proposed change would reduce the time allotted to members of the public for comment.
The entire package of new meeting rules is expected to come before the council for approval Jan. 23.
