FDA Approves Coca-Cola’s Recycled Plastic: The Food and Drug Administration approved the Coca-Cola Co.’s plans to sell its soft drinks in recycled plastic bottles. The approval paves the way for the first major use of such materials to package a food product. Approval by the FDA was not required, but the successful completion of the agency’s review was seen as crucial to assuring consumers that the recycled bottles are safe. Recycled plastic is widely used in packaging for such products as detergent, but not for food.
