Sprint Lays Off 280 Telemarketers: US Sprint Communications Co. has laid off 280 telemarketing employees, the nation’s third-largest long-distance phone company said. The employees laid off Wednesday were part of Sprint’s Consumer Services Group, which had 4,000 employees when it was formed in August in an effort to beef up sales to residential and small-business customers.
