Monsanto to Pay $1-Million Fine: Monsanto Co. agreed to pay the state of Massachusetts $1 million to settle a claim that it failed to report a discharge of untreated waste water into the Mystic River by the deadline imposed by state law. The penalty is the largest ever for a violation of Massachusetts environmental law. The state had contended that St. Louis-based Monsanto waited three days to report a leak of 200,000 gallons of untreated industrial waste water from its chemical manufacturing complex in Everett in February, 1990. Monsanto had contended that it reported the leak in the required 24 hours.
