CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : BAKERSFIELD : Environmental Art About to Blossom

Hundreds of giant yellow umbrellas are blossoming in a San Joaquin Valley warehouse in preparation for the creation of environmental artist Christo’s latest work. The yellow umbrellas--all 1,760 of them--will be planted along Southern California’s Tejon Pass, and 1,340 more--in blue--will be erected in the rice fields of Japan. The parasols will shoot up simultaneously on Oct. 8 or Oct. 15. This week, Christo’s dream was moving toward reality in a downtown warehouse where yellow fabric is unfurled and aluminum frameworks are riveted and painted. The outsized umbrellas, about 28 feet in diameter and 19 feet tall, are the first tangible evidence of the $26-million project.
