John C. Sharpe; Cardiologist, Former St. John’s Hospital Staff Chief

John C. Sharpe, an internist and cardiologist in the Southland for more than 35 years who was chief of staff at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica from 1948 to 1970, died Tuesday at home in Palos Verdes. He was 83 and died of heart failure.
A graduate of the University of Nebraska, Sharpe was an intern and resident at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore before returning to Nebraska to teach. In 1938 he was one of two doctors to begin a practice at the new ski resort at Sun Valley, Ida. His next private practice was in Beverly Hills where his patients included Ronald Reagan.
Among his publications was “Management of Medical Emergencies,” which he edited and which has been translated into several languages.
His survivors include his wife, Jane, eight children and 12 grandchildren.
