NATION : Separate Trial in Noriega Case

MIAMI — A federal judge today set a separate Feb. 18 trial for two minor co-defendants in the drug case of former Panamanian dictator Manuel A. Noriega, while one of the major co-defendants may be close to entering a plea.
U.S. District Judge William Hoeveler set the trial date for Brian Davidow and William Saldarriaga. They are among four remaining co-defendants, along with Amet Paredes, who is involved in plea bargaining, and Daniel Miranda, who asked for a trial delay.
Noriega has been in a federal prison south of Miami for more than a year on charges that he provided a safe haven to Colombian drug smugglers using Panama as a way station.
