NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Two Sentenced in Black Youth’s Death

Two men accused in the 1989 killing of a black youth by a group of white men in Brooklyn were sentenced in a Brooklyn court. John Vento, 22, already serving 2 1/3 to 8 years for a conviction of unlawful imprisonment and menacing, was sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years for rioting.Joseph Serrano, 21, was sentenced to 300 hours of community service, fined $1,000 and placed on three years of probation for possession of a weapon--a baseball bat. Vento and Serrano were two of eight men accused in the Aug. 23, 1989, shooting of 16-year-old Yusuf Hawkins, a killing that sparked months of bitter racial demonstrations.
