Monterey Park : Anti-Bush Stand Defeated

Saying they didn’t want to publicly oppose President Bush and his policy in the Persian Gulf, City Council members denied a resident’s request this week to consider a resolution against a gulf war.
Monterey Park resident Irving Willner had asked the council on Monday to call on the United States to continue the economic sanctions against Iraq instead of using force. But three council members--Betty Couch, Fred Balderrama and Marie Purvis--said they support the congressional action authorizing President Bush to use military force. Mayor Judy Chu said she opposes the use of force, and Councilman Sam Kiang said he is undecided.
