SOFIA, Bulgaria — Bulgarian officials Friday began removing a giant statue of V. I. Lenin that has dominated central Sofia for 25 years.
At midnight, workers moved in and carried away to an unknown destination the upper half of the 50-foot statue mounted opposite the former Communist Party headquarters in the capital, leaving just the legs.
The Bulgarian Parliament has ordered the removal of “foreign” symbols like communist red stars and hammer-and-sickle emblems from all public buildings.
