Juliet Man Ray; Model for Many of Husband’s Artworks

Juliet Man Ray, 79, a dancer and model who became a frequent subject of portraits by her husband, avant-garde photographer and painter Man Ray. Born Juliet Browner in the Bronx, she studied dance with Martha Graham, but soon became a model. She and Man Ray were married in 1946 and lived together in Paris until his death in 1976 at age 86. Man Ray’s works, which include photography, films and painting, are often exhibited on both sides of the Atlantic. The Man Rays lived and worked in a cramped studio where objects were suspended by pulleys and a parachute cloth was stretched across the ceiling. Mrs. Man Ray recently sought to restore his studio as a public museum, but could not raise enough money. In Huntington, N.Y., where she was visiting from Paris, on Thursday of a heart attack.
