Embezzling for High Life Earns 3 Years in Prison

NEW YORK — A Nebraska woman who lived the high life with millions embezzled from Citibank was sentenced today to three years and two months in prison for bank fraud.
Becky Schafer, 29, sat with head bowed, wiping away tears, after U.S. District Judge John F. Keenan imposed the sentence.
Earlier in the proceeding, Schafer, eight months pregnant, apologized for stealing $3.3 million from Citibank. “I know what I did was very wrong.”
Keenan also ordered her to pay $1.5 million in restitution to Citibank. The institution has already recovered $1.5 million.
Noting that it was “highly unlikely” that she would be able to repay the entire restitution amount, he said that she must give Citibank 20% of any salary she receives during three years of her probation period.
