Ret. Rear Adm. Thomas D. Davies, 76, twice the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for sinking a German submarine during World War II and for breaking a distance flight record from Perth to Columbus. After his retirement from the U.S. Navy in 1973, Davies became a disarmament official, accepting a presidential appointment as assistant director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. He later served on the Committee for National Security. A noted navigation expert, he invented the sky compass for navigating near the Earth’s magnetic poles.
