A Mission League boys’ basketball game between Bishop Montgomery and visiting St. Bernard was postponed Saturday night after the death of a Knight cheerleader Friday night, school officials said.
According to a report filed with the Harbor Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, Bishop Montgomery senior Katherine Kelly died following a three-car accident at 190th Street and Normandie Avenue.
Three of Kelly’s companions were also seriously injured. Two were taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Carson and the other was moved to Martin Luther King Hospital in South Central Los Angeles.
Police did not reveal details, saying only that detectives would review the incident Monday morning.
On Saturday night students, teachers and friends gathered in the Bishop Montgomery gymnasium to express their sorrow and dismay. Outside, scores of shocked students milled around alone or in groups.
Bishop Montgomery Coach Doug Mitchell was saddened by the news.
“We decided early this morning to (postpone) the game,” Mitchell said. “Right away. The kids were not ready and I wasn’t either. Suddenly basketball didn’t seem important any more.”
Officials have not decided when to replay reschedule the game. Bishop Montgomery has a game Wednesday night at Alemany.
