World IN BRIEF : EL SALVADOR : Rebels Blame Army for Massacre of 15
- Share via
El Salvador rebels accused an army colonel of killing 15 members of a family associated with the guerrilla forces. “Those assassinated were active collaborators in our forces, and one of them was a fighter of the (National Liberation Front),” a spokesman for the group said in a broadcast from San Salvador. He named Col. Francisco Elena Fuentes, commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade in San Salvador, as responsible for the killings. The military denied the report. Masked men in civilian clothes ambushed the 15 victims on the outskirts of the capital on Jan. 21. Forensic reports said 13 of them were stabbed to death and two died of gunshot wounds.
