HOW TO GET FREE INCOME TAX ADVICE
Today is the deadline for all employers to mail employees their W-2 forms, which detail wages and taxes paid during 1990.
If you have not received your W-2 form by the second week of February, you should contact your employer. If your employer is no longer in business or you are having trouble persuading your employer to send out your W-2 form, you should contact the Internal Revenue Service in Laguna Niguel at (800) 829-1040.
The IRS offers two programs to help those who need assistance in figuring out their federal income taxes. Trained volunteers versed in basic tax law will help people through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. While the programs are primarily for elderly, handicapped and low-income people, Internal Revenue Service spokeswoman Sally Ruhnau said anyone with simple tax questions can get help through the programs.
Taxpayers interested in the VITA sites’ hours of operation and services offered should call the IRS assistance line at (800) 829-1040 or the IRS Taxpayer Education office at (714) 643-4060. Both are operated out of the Laguna Niguel IRS office. Those interested in the TCE sites’ hours and services should call the phone number listed below with each site.
Most of the following sites will be staffed beginning next week and continuing through April 15.
