TRAVEL ADVISORY: Airlines used to fight for flights at John Wayne Airport, but the tables have turned. Although USAir is dropping local service May 2, other airlines aren’t battling for its slots. One reason is that the others agreed to a formula on how to divvy up the available positions. . . . With 10 of USAir’s daily departures of bigger passenger planes up for grabs, airport officials are recommending to county supervisors that American and America West get three apiece, United get two and Alaska and Continental get one each. . . . More turbulence may lie ahead. Airport Manager Jan Mittermeier notes that several big carriers serving John Wayne have an “uncertain” future.
