National Semiconductor Corp.: The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company reported third-quarter earnings of $5 million, contrasted with a net loss of $10.2 million a year ago. Sales for the quarter dropped 4% to $386.8 million. The results include a restructuring credit of $21.1 million primarily reflecting the sale of the company’s Puyallup, Wash., fabrication facility to Matsushita Electronics Corp. for $86 million. The firm said a difficult economic environment, combined with seasonal forces, caused a decrease in revenue and affected its profitability.
