Kmart Corp., Troy, Mich., named Charles R. Cumello president and chief operating officer of its 1,300-store Waldenbooks unit. Cumello, 46, succeeds Harry T. Hoffman, who has requested early retirement after 12 years as head of the Waldenbooks chain. Cumello, a former Melville Corp. executive, has since May, 1990, headed Kmart’s Reader’s Market division, which operates book departments in about 300 Kmart stores and services about 550 other Kmart stores.
