City Manager Says He’ll File Lawsuit Over Firing

Gaylord F. Knapp, the Cerritos city manager who was fired last week after 18 years on the job, has launched a fight over his termination.
Knapp’s attorney, James G. Harker of Irvine, sent a letter to the city Monday demanding that the City Council hold a public hearing on what the attorney termed the “unlawful suspension” of Knapp’s services. The attorney said that Knapp plans to sue the city for unspecified damages.
Mayor Ann B. Joynt declined to comment but said she expected the council to set a hearing date. Knapp had a contract that gave him nine months severance pay. He earned about $101,000 a year.
In dismissing Knapp last week, the council said he was talented at planning and developing a city, but Cerritos had moved out of the development stage and needed a different kind of manager.
