Fenwick Returns to Valley College; Goff to Retire as Athletic Director

The return of Jim Fenwick to the Valley College football staff and the impending retirement of men’s Athletic Director George Goff create the possibility for some interesting shuffling in the school’s physical education department.
Fenwick, former Valley assistant and Pierce head football coach, is back at Valley after spending two seasons at Miami (Ohio) and one at Pacific as an assistant.
Fenwick, Valley offensive coordinator during the 1987 season, said he is working with the offense. He said he returned to Valley, where he has tenure in the physical education department, because it offers more job security than four-year coaching.
Fenwick, 38, said he did not return to Valley under the assumption that he would become football coach but added that he would consider taking the coaching job if current Coach Chuck Ferrero became athletic director.
Ferrero, who has been football coach since 1980, declined to say whether he would apply for the athletic director position and refused to speculate on potential job shuffling at the school.
Fenwick said he might be interested in the athletic director’s post, which is expected to be filled in April.
“That position is attractive,” he said. “I might even look at that position.”
Fenwick was head coach at Pierce from 1981 to 1985 and led the Brahmas to three Southern California Conference championships. He was the special-teams coordinator at Cal State Northridge in 1986.
Goff, who came to Valley College in 1964 and has been men’s athletic director since 1972, has notified the school that he is retiring in June.
“I’ve been thinking about it for over a year,” said Goff, 62, who coached the football team from 1964 to 1971.
