Drug Tests on Rise, Study Finds: The number of U.S. firms that tested employees for drugs increased from 51.5% in 1989 to 63% in 1990. In a survey of 1,633 firms, the American Management Assn. found that the proportion of firms that tested on a random or periodic basis more than doubled from 1989, to 20.3% in 1990. Meanwhile, fewer firms--38% in 1990--tested only when drug use was suspected. Among California firms, 56.8% conducted drug tests, 13.7% tested periodically or at random, and 7.3% of new employees tested positive.
