Freighter Formal

The article “When Dressing Up Becomes a Formal Decision,” March 3, was interesting and helpful, especially to anyone planning a cruise. About five years ago when I sailed for 23 days on a freighter from Barry, England, to the Windward Islands, we wore formal clothes.
The voyage was on the Geest Line, which operates four passenger ships. They are British flag vessels with British officers. Geest Line suggests that the ladies wear formal gowns and the men wear either tuxedos or dinner jackets for dinner while at sea. All of the men but two complied and the officers wore formal uniforms.
Geest Line cabins are spacious and well furnished and the food is outstanding. Adequate shore time was available. Booking was by Freighter World Cruises in Pasadena. I found, to my surprise, that the formal dress from the cocktail hour and dinner added a happy touch to already joyous occasions.
