SANTA ANA : College to Spotlight Abilities of Disabled

Rancho Santiago College is planning a weeklong schedule of activities designed to draw attention to the special abilities of the disabled.
The college’s Disabled Awareness Week, which runs from next Monday through April 19, will feature a demonstration of high-tech computers for the visually handicapped, several guest speakers and a wheelchair race for students who are not disabled.
“This will give people who aren’t disabled a chance to try to get around in a wheelchair and see how difficult it can sometimes be,” said Jeff Townsell, a program specialist at the college’s Disabled Student Center.
There will also be a presentation of the college’s new disabled students’ bus shelter, which has been built to protect students from the rain while they wait for transportation. The 20-foot-long shelter will have room for wheelchairs and is expected to be used by up to 50 students per day.
