Last New York Automat Closes: The Horn & Hardart Automat has served up a final helping of baked beans and macaroni au gratin and closed its doors for good, the company announced. The automat at 42nd and 3rd Avenue in New York had been there since 1957 and was the last of 40 or so Horn & Hardart automats in New York and Philadelphia. The waiterless cafeterias were once heralded as the restaurants of the future but lost out to fast-food restaurants.
