General Electric Co.: The Fairfield, Conn., conglomerate’s first-quarter income rose 5% to $999 million. Revenue was up 6% to $13.3 billion. The company said business increased in most divisions. An exception was NBC, where soft advertising and the cost of covering the Persian Gulf War cut sharply into earnings.
