What really made the article a joke was the quote about Fernando being “a symbol of hope for every Mexican kid.” My wife, who grew up just in East Los Angeles and never followed the Dodgers, thought this exaggeration a bit corny. So for the record, neither she nor any of her Mexican-American family envisaged Valenzuela as a beacon of light or anything.
He was a great pitcher, though. His career was in decline and he was released. It happens all the time in sports.
Now various political activists want to milk a little publicity from this innocent turn of events. Soon, the cries of foul by a few political grandstanders will be drowned out by the cheers of fans in the grandstands.
