Aguirre, who allowed two earned runs in two victories and had 10 hits in 15 at-bats in four Argonaut victories, is the main reason Garden Grove is only one game out of first place in the Garden Grove League. “He has a great sense of the game,” Garden Grove Coach Jim Rawls said. “His extra bases come from knowing when to push it and when not to push it.” Taking the extra base has cut downon his chances to steal, Rawls said. Aguirre, who had three of his six triples last week, has only three stolen bases. But when you have a slugging percentage of 1.000 and an earned-run average of 1.54, who needs to steal bases? “He’s without a doubt the key to our success--our resurgence,” Rawls said.
Other top performers:
Jarrett Murrell, who won the 100-meter race in 10.85 seconds, finished second in the 200 in 22.04 and anchored Saddleback’s winning 400 relay team as the Roadrunners won the team title at the Orange County Championships.
Mark Parlin, who threw a personal-best 194 feet 2 inches to finish third and 62-3 1/4 to finish second for Esperanza at the Arcadia Invitational.
David Whitby, who went seven for eight with seven RBIs in Whittier Christian’s victory over Brethren and loss to Whitney.
Scott Wood, who had three home runs, a double and eight RBIs in two Kennedy victories, including a 6-3 victory over Fullerton for the championship of the Anaheim Lions Tournament.
