COUNTYWIDE : 12 County Students Given Scholarships

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. has named 12 Orange County high school seniors as winners of its prestigious merit awards.
More than 1 million students nationwide were screened for the merit program when they took their preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests during their junior year. The National Merit Scholarship Corp., which chooses more than 6,000 high school seniors for the scholarships each year, announced the first group of 1,250 winners Wednesday.
The students are chosen for academic performance, test scores and extracurricular activities after being selected by corporations that sponsor the awards. The students are also required to provide autobiographies and recommendations from their high schools.
The Orange County merit scholar winners who were named Wednesday:
Billy J. Wang, Canyon High School, Anaheim; John C. White, Brea-Olinda High School, Brea; Loren A. Cheng, Sunny Hills High School, Fullerton; David S. Mauceli, Marina High School, Huntington Beach; John J. Gotthard, Irvine High School, Irvine; Jeannie W. Wang, Los Alamitos High School, Los Alamitosa Jenny A. Juang, Valencia High School, Placentia, and Brandi E. Henderson, Stephanie J. Hong, Navid Jahed, Jane J. Park and Winston W. Chang, all of University High School, Irvine.
