Malfunction Forces Plane Back to LAX 2 Times

A TWA L-1011 airliner heading to St. Louis had to return twice to Los Angeles International Airport because the nose gear door would not retract after takeoff, authorities said.
Flight 316, carrying 288 passengers, took off Thursday at 10:20 a.m. and returned at 10:53 a.m. because the pilot had an indication that the door did not retract, said Elly Brekke, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman.
The plane returned to the gate and the problem was inspected. The plane left only to return at 12:15 p.m. because of the same problem, Brekke said. The airliner was sent to a hangar for work and the passengers were put on another flight, said TWA spokesman Jim Faulkner in St. Louis.
