When Officers Err, Fire the Chief?

Well, now that we have the news of a San Clemente police officer being accused of raping some women in that city, I wish to know whether we are going to fire the police chief of that city.
After all, we are trying to do that to (Los Angeles) Police Chief Daryl Gates for what his men have done! Does this seem fair or does it just seem to be something of a “political nature?”
