Varian Associates Inc.: The Palo Alto maker of semiconductor equipment, medical equipment and instruments said first-quarter profit soared 85% to $16 million. Revenue jumped 19% to $360 million. The company said a successful effort to reduce manufacturing cycle times, plus strong sales overseas, were key reasons for the improved results.
