Condom Ads, Part II

Regarding Pauly Shore’s article, “Condom Ads Belong in TV’s Sexual Jungle” (Counterpunch, Oct. 7): As a teen-ager, I know what gets through to people my age. We don’t need another adult of our parent’s generation giving us information about what’s good and bad for us. Someone I really relate to is speaking out about something that should be everyone’s concern--not only that, but getting the message through. Broadcasting companies do need to advertise and promote safe sex to teens.
At first glance, Shore isn’t every parent’s dream about who should be educating their children about sex. Longish hair, jeans and untucked shirts are representative of Shore. What a first glance doesn’t reveal is that he’s smart. This MTV video jockey is wise to today’s teens and wise to the importance of safe sex.
He’s also someone who obviously cares and takes teens seriously. Such an important message, expressed to us by someone whom we honestly listen to, will definitely get through to young men and women who think sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy are things that will never happen to them. Many teens watch television. Isn’t it about time that television gave a positive, safe message?
