Alhambra : Lifting of Dance Permit OKd

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously upheld the Planning Commission’s decision to revoke for six months the dance permit held by the Sugar Baby Diner at 247 E. Main St. The council said that the city originally permitted a diner with an incidental dance floor but that Sugar Baby has essentially become a nightclub with incidental food service.
Police Chief Russell Siverling said there have been reports of tailgate parties in the parking lot of the diner at 247 E. Main St. He added that there have been no recent complaints.
Michael Yu, a lawyer for Sugar Baby owner Cho Tam, contends that the council and commission are taking away his client’s property rights. He accused the commission of “borderline discrimination against people of Chinese ancestry,” because the owner has a foreign-sounding name.
Through an interpreter, Tam said he was losing money on the business and wanted to sell but would be unable to do so without the dance permit.
