Long Beach : Oil Exploration Deal Gets OK of Lands Commission
- Share via
The State Lands Commission has unanimously approved an agreement between the city of Long Beach and the Atlantic Richfield Co. to explore for oil on the man-made islands off Ocean Boulevard.
Approval of the legislation, already signed by the governor, was the final hurdle to an arrangement that would halt oil drilling off the coast of Santa Barbara in exchange for the rights to begin in Long Beach, where opposition to the plan was minimal. Environmentalists were opposed to the Santa Barbara drilling because the coastline there is pristine, while Long Beach’s islands were built specifically for that purpose.
